The Nutcracker

DSC_0485

The Nutcracker. I’m a little bit ballet obsessed, have been for years and it probably wont ever go away. I haven’t taken a class in a long while, switching to ballroom instead. Don’t even ask how I managed to convince my husband to take class with me, that might be a whole different post…. Basically I love everything dance. I still have all my old pointe shoes and dance outfits. I admit it was slightly painful putting on the shoes but I did it!

This time of year always brings me back to my first love and that also means I become slightly obsessed with The Nutcracker! No matter what, I always watch it on Christmas Eve or Day. I have even gone so far as to skip or be late for a dinner because I’m completely lost in that magical world. The past few years, however, have been slightly devastating because the classics don’t seem to be on anymore. I’m old school when it comes to this. I don’t need cartoons or contemporary dancers (who I generally love), I just need a good old fashioned Nutcracker. Can you believe there is even one that takes place somewhere warm? What is that all about? I’m sure living on an island must be absolute heaven but it’s not The Nutcracker! As a result my wonderful husband has been buying me a different video each year in order try and satiate my obsession.

As girlie as I can be when it comes to ballet I’m not a Sugar Plum fairy fan. It’s the Arabian dance that steals my heart. I have a memory of watching one ballerina who was absolutely mesmerizing! She must have been a member of The National Ballet of Canada but it was such a long time ago that by now I can’t be sure where I saw her. For now my goal is to see someone equal or better to the dancer I can see so clearly in my mind.

Years and years ago, before my mom refused to see yet another Nutcracker, we wound up going on the wrong night. Basically she messed up the show days. She had no desire to return so she told me to keep my mouth shut and proceeded to sweet talk some manager into letting us watch that night’s performance. There was some talk about us having to leave on an emergency trip and we wouldn’t be able to come another night, that her daughter would be devastated and wasn’t there anything they could do? Well it worked. Two comfortable armchairs were brought in and suddenly we had prime seats! Genius.

So tonight I’m off to see yet another Nutcracker, this time it’s a filmed performance of the Royal Ballet. Hoping to see my Arabian princess!

Do you love The Nutcracker?

  1. How sweet! Sometimes I wish I had at least tried dance when I was younger. I am not sure I have actually ever seen The Nutcracker, I know I have heard the music. How fun to have your husband involved in dance class with you 🙂

    a thousand million words

  5. You still have great dance gams.

    1. Woohoo! Thanks. I was just happy I could still stand in my pointe shoes.

  6. what a sweet post! if i could have any talent and be anything when i grow up, it would be a ballerina. unfortunately, i was not blessed with rhythm or grace. your pointe shoes are fab though!

    1. Thanks! Yeah, my dream was ballet for a long time but just didn’t have the body for it…..

  7. Michi of Delphina Luxe

The arabian dance is my favorite dance too. It’s so majestic and beautiful.

    1. It is! I find the music so haunting.

  8. How sweet of your hubby!
I love anything ballet….just mesmerizing! Amazing athletes, too!
    Enjoy your movie!

    1. They really are! I’ve had that argument with lots of people. I know how much I trained and I wasn’t anywhere near their level!

  9. My Fashion S/ash Life

I too love ballet (favourites are Swan Lake, then Nutcracker) and Dance in general. I did ballet as a kid from about 7 till i was around 9. And then sadly, I had to stop just after I got my pointes, and now decades later, I still have them hanging in my room. In my late teens I did other dances, Lambada, samba, hip hop etc which I have to say I got quite good at.
And now I can look back and say that though I will always love ballet, I would never have been ‘great’ at it. I just didn’t have that grace…
Since I became a stylist and now fashion editor, my dream has always been to do a fashion shoot incorporating movement and ballet in it and tomorrow I will be doing just that and I cant wait.
And one day when I have a big enough budget, I will do a full blown fashion ediorial with fantastic set designs, brilliant ballet dancers, costumes- the works! So this is how I now want to show my appreciation for ballet’s immense artform, because it had such a strong impact on me as a kid.
Wow this is quite a story so, The End.

    1. This is awesome. I’m thinking you just need to make this into a whole post of your own!

  10. That story is really touching and beautiful! I so much enjoyed reading about your profound love for ballet. Lucky you for having so wonderful people around you like mom or hubby, with whom you can share that passion. Thanks for sharing with us today!

  13. I have always wanted to be a ballerina but my mum sent me to the swimming pool when I was a child 🙁

    1. I love it so much. I’ve done so many other kinds of dance but they somehow never felt as good.

      1. I’m sure! That’s the thing with dance, once you find one that strikes a cord w/ya or makes you dance for hours (pun intended), well, you still w/it! xx LOL!

I always loved ballet. But lack of formal training, would love to go for training any time
    Haley http://www.instyleforless.org

  26. I work in a ballet studio part time, but they aren’t doing a full blown Nutcracker for the holiday performance, the advanced dancers are just doing one dance…Arabian! It’s gorgeous and the costumes are amazing. It’s always been my favorite to watch, as well!
There’s this station called Ovation TV on cable and they have a battle of the Nutcrackers every year this time, you should take a look and see if you can find it – it’s just nonstop Nutcracker versions from different companies. Really fun to watch and compare. Happy Holidays!

    1. AHHHH!!!!! That is the best news I have heard all day. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

      1. Hope you’re able to find it!
