The Truth About Weight Loss

 

 

THE TRUTH ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS

Spending four and a half years living in Europe showed me just how messed up my eating habits had become.

I always knew what I was doing wasn’t healthy but I did it anyway. For a long time, my dream was to become a dancer and that meant training all the time. Sure, I would eat and sometimes a lot, but I could never be skinny enough. It was all I could think of.

Then something happened. I moved and basically stopped dancing so much and as a result I started gaining weight. I was lonely (my husband was working all the time) and I ate to keep myself entertained. I quickly realized what was happening and nipped it in the bud by increasing workouts and changing my diet.

A few years later, I moved to Europe. Once there, I realized that it was possible to be normal around food and exercise and it wasn’t something that had to be spoken about incessantly.

Let me tell you about two scenarios that actually happened.

One. This was in Vancouver and I think it perfectly describes how warped people are. I was out with a group of friends and we stopped at a restaurants for some appetizers and drinks. As we were deciding what to get, the waiter came up and said, “remember ladies, nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”. He realized his mistake right away and his face was a study, but the damage was already done. We ordered four waters and he didn’t receive a tip. This might sound like the extreme and it is to an extent, but year after year Vancouver is rated the world’s third worst dressed city. This is because everyone is constantly dressed in workout gear.

I’ve grown to hate going out to dinner with certain friends because I know that we first need to have a discussion about the calorie content of what we are about to eat and then we need to discuss how much we worked out and how much we will work out to burn off those calories. Frankly, it’s exhausting and unpleasant. It’s puts unwanted stress on us and how can you possibly live up to made up ideals.

Two. Soon after I arrived in Poland, my husband and I were walking down the street when I spotted a girl, on her own, walking and eating an ice cream….. I was shocked. I’m not even kidding. I looked back at her and I couldn’t figure out why everyone else was ignoring her. It took me give or take four years to start getting over my fear of eating in public, although I don’t think I ever ate a single desert in public.

Sure enough, the minute we returned, all of those food insecurities returned full force.

What ever happened to moving regularly and eating normal healthy portions of unprocessed foods?

My answer to most of this is to do everything in moderation. There are days when I don’t eat great and other days when I’m a saint and the same goes for working out. I’ve also actively tried to stay away from eating out with friends who I know are going to be a toxic influence.
