How To Wear Dark Nail Polish

How to wear dark nail polish. Something happens to me in the fall and winter months. I get very strong cravings for dark nail polishes. Blues, deep  reds, purples and grays, I just can’t get enough of them. In the summer, wearing polish feels like too much (except on my toes) but when the days get gray, I need drama.  I have pale skin at the best of times, so when I reach for these shades, I need to ensure that my look is contemporary, chic and not goth. I’ve read many posts and articles where people explain who can and who can’t wear a dark nail polish. Truthfully, I’m not sure that I buy this. The way I see it is that as long as the colour goes with your skintone and you love it, go for it!

HOW TO WEAR DARK NAIL POLISH

Pale skin.  If you have pale or porcelain skin, you can absolutely wear dark nail polishes. I simply reach for shades which have a blue undertone. Rich reds, berry colours like plum and even blues look great. Metallic brown or dark copper adds just the right amount of reflective elements for an elegant look.

Medium skin. For those of you with medium skin tones, this includes tan and olive complexions, look for warm undertones. I love any shade with a thread of gold shimmer. Picture a classic deep ruby red with added shimmer or a gorgeous plum with flecks of gold. Such a beautiful and chic look.

Dark skin. If I had a dark complexion, I would reach for drama and the more the better. Rich aubergine in a high shine or a deep sultry brown make for the ideal shades.  Rather than a ruby red, I would choose a warm burgundy. Add some shimmer and you have the perfect shade for a glamorous night out.

Remember that, as with all makeup, there is always an element of trial and error. Just because a shade looks great on the shelf or is trendy at this moment, does not mean that it will look good on everyone. The key to wearing dark  polish is keeping your nails short and neatly rounded, as this keeps them looking modern and sophisticated.
