How do I know if my skincare is working. We’ve all been there, where you suddenly see this fabulous new cream that promises you the world. You instinctively know that it will single-handedly solve all of your beauty woes. Those pesky lines that have been worrying you of late? They’ll disappear. That sun spot that reminds you of the years baking in the sun? Gone. All your friends will want to know what you are using and why you suddenly look 10 years younger. So without a second thought, you happily purchase that miracle cream, slather it on your face and….Wait for it….
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY SKINCARE IS WORKING
Know your skin type. This is always your first step because what works for your friend or a model in a magazine or on Instagram isn’t necessarily going to work for you, no matter how much you want it to. If you’ve been dabbling in skincare for years then you probably have a good idea of what skin type you have, but keep in mind that it can change depending on hormone fluctuations or even major weather patterns.
Understand the ingredients. Unless you are under a doctor’s care for a specific skin condition, it’s probably best to stick with soothing moisturizing ingredients. It’s important to read the labels and know what could be an irritant. Also, know that there isn’t one ingredient that will solve all of your skin’s issues. It’s a delicate balance of ingredients that includes your diet and lifestyle.
Don’t believe the hype. While marketers may not be outright lying, understand that their primary goal is to sell you the product. You can’t expect a cream to miraculously get rid of all your wrinkles or spots and give you a flawless complexion. That just isn’t going to happen.
Be consistent. Your skin responds best to a set routine. If you don’t believe me, take a good long look in the mirror after a few nights of not washing your makeup off. Remember that using your products in the right order also counts. A serum needs to be applied to a freshly cleansed face to give it the best possible chance of being absorbed deep into your skin, just like a sunscreen should be the finishing touch and the final step before applying your makeup.
Give it time. Unless you are going in for an actual medical procedure or are using a high potency cream prescribed by a doctor, you will need to be patient. It took years for those sun spots and fine lines to start appearing, so it will take at least a month (for serums about 6-8 weeks, for spot treatments 3-4 weeks) to start seeing real results. Although a good moisturizer will make a difference in just a couple of weeks. Also, be prepared to maintain those changes. A good way to start is to be vigilant about always applying sunscreen.
I know it’s tempting to change creams, to dabble and to experiment but if you can help it try sticking to a new one for at least 30 days to give your skin a chance to be at its best.
